Post 172 - 5/25/08 A day at the Beach I had thought I was going to post another shot from our NYC trip yesterday, but since we were at the Jersey shore today I decided to go with this one. I was playing with camera settings and then a little with Picasa when I got home so I am not sure exactly how I got this effect, but I liked it. It's a little different style for me. So I will save the New York shots for their own gallery. Have a safe and fun Memorial Day tomorrow...!
Post 172 - 5/24/08 **New York Skyline as sun goes down... Yesterday we were in the city to walk, take pics, see 2 movies, and eat dinner in Chinatown... Really a spectacular day. This was taken from the car as we left the city. I loved the warm colors reflected on the buildings and managed to catch the sun reflection on one. This was not as sharp as I would have liked and sort of grainy, but it did give the essence of what we saw. Love this city!!! So glad we live close enough to visit often. We even found free street parking today! I will make a NEW YORK CITY gallery soon as a place to house some of my favorite city shots. **Yikes...CORRECTION 5/27...Michael's comment below made me rethink this shot. Steve and I looked on the map and this is actually more likely to be the Jersey City, New Jersey skyline rather than Manhattan..We had already passed through the Holland Tunnel on our way back to the Turnpike back to Pennsylvania. Thank you for paying enough attention to my photo, Michael, to realize there was something wrong with this picture!!!
Post 171 - 5/23/08 Playing with Dolls... Well, there was wonderful light coming in the window this afternoon as I was making the bed. I thought the sheet would make a good backdrop soooo, I started looking around to see if there was something fun to take a picture of and use my 50mm 1.4 a little. I remembered these very old dolls I had tucked away in a drawer. I don't really know their history except I remember they were always around my house since I was a very little girl. I am not sure, but I think these came from the "old country". My grandparents came across to the US in steerage from Eastern Europe in the very early 1900's, about 1901 or 1902. My mom was the 3rd of 4 girls born here in the US in 1910. I don't know if these dolls were just bought here in the US when she was little or actually came from Europe. In any case, they are pretty fragile and have been wrapped in newspaper for a couple of years. I was afraid to try too hard to get the dust off. They are possibly from Lativia where my mother's parents were from. Looks like the doll in the middle was a Rabbi with peasants at his side. Not quite Fiddler on the Roof, but the same idea! 5/24/08 - Per suggestions, I did a little research on eBay and they look very similar to some antique Russian cloth dolls c.1920 that are for sale. I did send a message to the seller to see if he could tell me about them if I sent him a photo. I don't want to sell them, but would like to know about them. My mother would have been 10 years old in 1920 so that makes sense that they might have been hers as a child. I have one aunt left who is 91 and I will see if she can tell me anything about them. Thanks for your interest in them and compliments on the photo!!! Have a safe and Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!! Here is my other contender for today! http://cleantth.smugmug.com/gallery/4044477_ghcHA/1#300270873_cDYkv
