Post 158 - 5/09/08 A real New Yorker and his wife strolling on Amsterdam Avenue. While in New York on Sunday, Steve recognized a longstanding multi-media and award winning science journalist by the name of Robert Krulwich. I wasn't familiar with his name, but when I saw him, I certainly remembered seeing him frequently on television. I took a photo after he and his wife passed us and didn't think more about it. Anyway, I wandered up the street a little to look for other 'Kodak Moments' and wandered into a bird store on Amsterdam Avenue where just by chance, Mr Krulwich and his wife were shopping and looking at birds. She and I exchanged smiles and I made small talk with Mr. K while looking at some exotic birds about participating on a photography web site where people often posts fabulous shots of birds in the wild and maybe I could get a shot in that would trick them into thinking I got a special 'in the wilds' shot..We laughed a little about how hard that would be when the birds were in cages or behind glass, then went our separate ways. I did not ask for a photo or want to be a Papparazzi and take his picture head on... They were just a warm and friendly couple strolling on a Sunday afternoon doing things New Yorkers do and dressed like every day people..It was nice feeling. I felt this photo, in the end, was rather special. I took a shot that allows Steve and me to remember them as part of our afternoon, but preserves their privacy on their day in New York. When we came home we looked him up on Wikipedia and he is quite an impressive man with many newsworthy accomplishments...nice that he is so down to earth in his private life..at least that was how he appeared to me.
