Post 688 6.14.10 Yesterday Steve and I drove into NYC on the spur of the moment and visited "The Tenement Museum" down in the Lower East Side...It was one of the most fascinating tours I have ever been on. My grandfather came from Eastern Europe as part of the European Jewish immigration of the early 1900's ( 1901 or 1902) and was a 'Gentleman's Tailor' in NYC...to walk into that building that was built in 1863 and enter the hallway left just as it was originally built just about brought me to my knees..it was an over powering feeling to stand there and 'feel' the life of these people who came to the US for a safe and prosperous new life.. amazing experience! If you are in NYC, I 100% recommend taking that museum tour. All tours are guided, you cannot enter the building without a group... Each floor has 3 apartments..one they left as is, so you could see what the building was like in 1988 when it was bought for the museum ( It had been closed and condemned since 1935) My tour was about the early 1900's and Jewish Immigration and the Garment Business. There is a tour about Irish Immigration and another that is an overview of these early years and all kinds of immigration... Totally a worthwhile and terrific experience!!!
Post 687 6.13.10 Still editing Dragon Boat Regatta and Guadalajara pics. This was a mural in Ajijic, Mexico... I just love wall murals. I may post another daily tonight since I missed posting yesterday. At the last minute, we decided to go into NYC today for the day....
POST 686 6.11.10 The drum that beats to keep the boats going..... On each Dragon Boat there was a person drumming on this drum as he watched the front two rowers power through the water..the drum beat is to help the rest of the 20 or so rowers keep in sync with the first two... I liked this shot that was taken before the races started..there was a nice soft early morning light.. ( I am not usually one to be up shooting this early in the morning...when I am up, it's off to work... )
